Jill Meldrum-Jones, a 37-year-old teaching assistant has been sentenced to 32 months in jail for performing oral sex on a student.
The unnamed student, who was just 15-years-old received three blowjobs from Meldrum-Jones as they were 35,000 feet high on a flight returning from a school trip.
Meldrum-Jones, a married mother of two, has been found guilty of seven charges of sexual activity with a child, as well as one count of inciting sexual activity and she has been forced to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register, reports the BBC.
Meldrum-Jones pleaded guilty to all charges, and according to the BBC, showed remorse for her gross misconduct as the prosecutor, Stefan Kolodynski, explained how she had become ‘consumed with lust’ during the school trip.
According to the BBC, Kolodynski told the court Meldrum-Jones had sent text messages to the boy referencing the sex acts also containing ‘conversation geared towards arranging further sexual congress’.
At the time of sentencing, the presiding judge, Philip Gregory, told Meldrum-Jones:
“You at the time were a teaching assistant charged with responsibility for teenage children. It almost beggars belief that somebody from your background – happily married with two children and intelligent – should so lose control of your senses and judgement that you would permit yourself to behave in this way.”
A victim statement from the young man stated he has since suffered, feeling ‘nervous and embarrassed’.
In mitigation, the court heard the shameful and ‘risky’ nature of the crime was extremely out of character and the disturbing abuse of power may have been linked to Jones’ mental state.
