The human body is so elegant and beautiful that it’s often all too easy to forget that our bodies are composed of base organic matter.
Sometimes we are reminded in the most visceral ways and it can be truly shocking. Take, for instance, the case a 36-year-old patient who sadly passed away recently after coughing up an essential part of his right lung.
Sickness is a terrible thing and according to the New England Journal of Medicine, the patient was originally admitted to hospital due to heart failure. The man had a history of poor cardiovascular health, whereby his organs were not provided with the appropriate levels of blood to function properly.
A pacemaker was installed to aid with this but complications later arose.
The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit at the University of California San Francisco Medical Centre. It was here that he entered a violent coughing fit.
His lungs were impacted by his heart condition and the coughing exacerbated to the point that he sadly coughed up the bronchial tree from his right lung.
The bronchial tree is made up of a series of tubes that take air from the windpipe to the lungs. The moment that this happened, doctors were quick to perform a bronchoscopy but the heart failure complications were unfortunately too severe.
A week after this happened the patient sadly passed away.
Cases like these are sobering reminders of just how delicate and precious our bodies are, and why it’s important that we take as much care of them as we possibly can.
