For a while now, gamers across a range of devices and consoles have been able to play with one another. This has created a more balanced ecosystem and has been a big step in putting the traditional console wars to bed.
This cross-platform play was one of the secrets to the wild success of Fortnite. In fact, there are around an incredible 125 million players currently enjoying the game with new arrivals swelling those numbers each day.
Whether people were playing on a smartphone, Switch, Xbox, or PC the experience was pretty much the same. The only one left out of the gang, though, was Sony.
Playstation owners were left out of the party… until now.
Today, Sony made a shock announcement that it will begin allowing its users to play Fortnite with players using other consoles. The move makes total sense: the pool of players grows for everybody and Playstation has started to remove the perception of it as a console behind the times.
Other consoles have supported this functionality for a while for titles like Fortnite and Rocket League.
Fortnite is the perfect game to trial the cross-platform capabilities of Playstation and many are predicting that if it’s successful, the number of cross-platform games will open up further. In fact, the blog post announcing the update says:
We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.
These are exciting times for online gaming communities and we can’t wait to see Playstation players out there – welcome to the party!
